Symphony No. 7 (2021)

The single purpose behind writing the Seventh Symphony was to render a piece made entirely of patrician music – nothing surprising or edgy. The scoring exploits a spirit of openness, influenced by wide spaces between voices and the persistence of minor seventh intervals. The overall effect is one of a protracted seventh chord that remains unresolved. It’s as if a door is left ajar at the end. The single-movement format and overall architecture execute a nod in the direction of Jean Sibelius, whose Seventh Symphony is in one movement.
