Golden Gate Fantasy (1981)

Instrumentation: Brass Band
Difficulty: level 4, medium

Golden Gate Fantasy is a “cousin” of Dance Etudes. During my visit to Switzerland in 1981, I met (the late) John Golland who was also having a new piece premiered at Festliche Musiktage Uster. John explained the brass band instrumentation to me and encouraged me to compose a piece for him and his band in Dukinfield. I composed Golden Gate Fantasy immediately upon my return home. John mentioned that his players responded enthusiastically to evocative imagery in the title of a piece, and suggested a famous bridge in my home state of California. That was the Golden Gate Bridge, and hence, not only the title, but the influence upon the music.
