This composition was composed as a gift for my friend and colleague, Dr. Ronald Johnson, of The University of Northern Iowa. Its origin lies in a concert I heard in the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig during which the school organist performed a set of variations by Mendelssohn on this hymn tune. It is one of Bach’s more melodic hymn tunes and it was also used as the basis of a very great composition in the band’s repertoire, the Angel’s Camp by Charles Cushing. It is a tune that seems to stay in my mind.
