During the early summer a year before this fanfare was composed, I was on a trip throughout Italy. The weather was perfect for a walk on the first evening in Florence – a walk that took me from my hotel near the Central Market into town and across the Arno, which I followed along its southern bank until I reached the Ponte Vecchio. There I crossed the river and walked toward the Piazza della Signoria, past the Palazzo Vecchio, and continued in the direction of the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore. The best way I could describe the way the Duomo appeared to me the first time I saw it is to say that it “burst into view” the moment I entered the Piazza del Duomo. My fanfare conveys my immediate impression of the façade of the Duomo as a wall of floral color that vaults upward from the square.
